I received a letter yesterday for leaving the scene of an accident without permission.
On 13.12. in the afternoon, I hit a car that was parked in the driver's door. I left a note with my information on their windshield because I had to go to the emergency room at the hospital because I had cut my finger badly. Now, at the beginning of January, I received a letter about the accident and was asked to write down what happened. Yesterday, I received a letter from the police saying that I should bring my ID and my car to the appointment. They wrote to me as a witness. Now I am afraid of losing my driver's license. The police were not there on the day of the accident, and I was foolish enough to leave a note. I don't know what to do now.
Dear questioner,
Based on the situation described, it is likely that the crime can be proven against you. In such situations, confessing is the only way to reduce the punishment.
While it is understandable that you had to go to the hospital because of your injury, this does not justify leaving the scene of the accident. After receiving treatment in the emergency department, you should have immediately gone to the police to provide your personal details.
Leaving a note is not sufficient.
You are not obligated to show the car to the police, but if you do not do so voluntarily, the police can have it seized as evidence.
To minimize the damage, it is best to not only show the car, but also provide evidence of the hospital treatment you received. This way, the reasons for your leaving the scene of the accident can be taken into account as a mitigating circumstance.
