Ask a doctor on the topic of Pediatrics

The German word "Sturz" can be translated to "fall" or "drop" in English.

Hello, my 4.5 year old daughter fell on her head from the sofa about 2 days ago. She immediately cried, was not unconscious, and did not feel nauseous or dizzy. However, she occasionally complains of headaches at the site of the fall. Could this still indicate a serious problem after 2 days, or is the risk low that there could be something like a brain hemorrhage? Throughout the day she behaved normally, but in the evening she says that her head hurts at the front of her forehead. Thank you.

Good evening,

if your daughter did not hit her head on the stone tiles, there is no need to fear a brain hemorrhage. The trauma is not strong enough for that. But of course, her forehead may still hurt a bit, as a bruise (or "bump") is unpleasant.

The fact that she did not even feel nauseous (and did not lose consciousness) also suggests a harmless bruise.

Signs of a brain hemorrhage would be steadily increasing headaches that would become unbearable with exertion.... These are not present in your daughter (and the fall would have had to be much worse for that). If such pains do occur, you should of course see a doctor immediately.

But for now, there is no need to worry.

Wishing you all a happy Easter!
Sincerely, Dr. Höllering, specialist in internal and general medicine
