Does bisoprolol increase libido and testosterone?

Dear medical team,

I am a 32-year-old male, 184 cm tall, and weighing around 100 kg. I am a rather nervous person who gets worked up about everything. Since the age of 18, I have experienced episodes of rapid heartbeat about 2-3 times a year, as well as regular extrasystoles. A suspicion of AV node reentry was made in the hospital. A cardiologist has thoroughly checked me and my heart is otherwise very healthy. My blood pressure is usually around 140/90 and my pulse is around 80. My cardiologist prescribed me with Bisoprolol 2.5 mg. When I take it, my blood pressure drops to around 123/82 and my pulse to 65. I do not take it regularly, but instead do a "course" for 2-3 months a year when I have a very stressful period. Now, here is my rather unusual question: I have been very afraid of the side effects of these pills, including the often described potency problems or loss of libido. However, to my surprise, every time I take Bisoprolol 2.5 mg a day, my already existing libido increases even more and my potency as well. It is basically the opposite of what is often described as a side effect. How can this be? Could Bisoprolol possibly increase testosterone in some individuals? Because that is how I feel after taking it. I have researched extensively on the internet but have not found any information on this. I would greatly appreciate your response or any ideas on this matter.

Hello!
Thank you for your question.
Erectile dysfunction or loss of libido are rather rare side effects of beta blockers such as Bisoprolol. Considering that you are taking a low daily dose of 2.5 mg, this side effect would be even less likely.
Your perception may not be based on a direct effect of the medication. I would rather assume that Bisoprolol, among other things, leads to a sense of inner peace due to its lowering of blood pressure and heart rate. In such a relaxed state, the body is more ready for sexuality. Stress is often responsible for potency problems.
I wish you a wonderful day!
