Side effects of Preterax and Codeine
October 22, 2015 | 20,00 EUR | answered by Dr. med. Frauke Gehring
I had mild strokes in 1.14 and 7.15.
Medication:
Metformin 1g
Simvastatin 40mg
Aspirin 100mg
Preterax ?
Omeprazole
Tamsulosin 0.4mg
Since taking Preterax, I have constant clearing of the throat with dry cough.
My doctor prescribed codeine! (counterproductive for stroke ??)
Can I stop or replace Preterax, since I only have slightly high blood pressure? With what? I can get it here in Spain without a prescription!
Hello,
It is really incomprehensible why your doctor acted this way. Perindopril is an ACE inhibitor and if it causes coughing (which it does in 7% of cases), it will do so permanently. Taking codeine briefly is not particularly sensible, but taking it permanently is definitely not a good idea!
The solution is so simple: a sartan, for example Candesartan in combination with HCT (Candesartan comp). This works similarly to Preterax, but does not cause this irritating cough.
You won't get this without a prescription, which also makes sense because your blood pressure should be monitored. I would clearly tell your doctor that you have "read" that Perindopril could be responsible for the cough, and ask him to switch to Candesartan comp, for example.
I hope he will see reason!
Best regards, Dr. Höllering
