Recurring nausea attacks with vomiting and intense shivering without fever.

My husband suffers from sudden nausea attacks, which quickly lead to vomiting and very strong chills without fever, but with enormous sweating. The vomiting occurs in waves and lasts for about 12 hours, just like the chills. During this time, everything he consumes causes strong nausea and vomiting. After about 10 to 12 hours, the vomiting and chills stop and he starts feeling better. He rests, is able to eat and drink normally again, everything stays down, no more chills. After the first attack of this kind, we thought it was due to spoiled food. After 4-5 years, the same thing repeated with exactly the same course, then it took about 4 years until the next time. The last attack of this kind he had was half a year ago and now he is in the hospital for inpatient treatment, as the same symptoms have been recurring every night for a week. He feels better during the day. The previous examinations (ultrasound of the stomach, gastroscopy, CT brain, various blood tests) were inconclusive. Is it possible that it is a virus that causes acute symptoms during times of weakened immune defenses (as is known with cold sores)? Before this attack, my husband had a severe feverish cold that was treated with several antibiotics. The antibiotic treatment had been completed for about a week when the symptoms started. Or a fungus? Are there tests for that? We are at a loss (and so far are the doctors). Thank you very much!

Good day,

This symptomatology does not fit a persistent virus, and certainly not a fungus. Since your husband does not have a fever and feels better after 12 hours, we do not need to continue looking for an pathogen.

Suspicious here is a food intolerance, which (admittedly) is difficult to find, especially if it involves preservatives or other additives. I recommend keeping a detailed food diary for the 24 hours before the symptoms start. We are familiar with such reactions from peanut allergy sufferers, where even traces are enough to trigger a severe reaction.

The fact that your husband is symptom-free again after 12 hours supports my theory, as after that time all substances he has ingested are denatured or digested and thus can no longer cause harm.

I hope you find the trigger soon!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
