Coagulation disorder or leukemia

Good evening,

I have something that is bothering me. I have had 3 small blue bruises on my left leg in the past 2 weeks without remembering bumping into anything. My last blood test was exactly 3 months ago and was normal. I am feeling a bit tired right now but otherwise I am fit, although I stopped taking my birth control pill a month ago. I am not taking any medications.

Could the blue bruises be a sign of leukemia?
Is it possible to have bleeding when stopping the birth control pill? If so, can it occur in organs and the brain and become life-threatening?

I am really worried.

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good evening,

You don't need to worry.

The pill makes the blood clot excessively easily (increased risk of thrombosis), stopping it normalizes blood clotting again. This does not promote bleeding.

Also, individual bruises are not a sign of leukemia. If there are bleeding events under leukemia, they affect the whole body, and at this point one feels seriously ill.

All the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
