Cortisone vs. Botox / Hyaluronic acid injection
December 22, 2011 | 25,00 EUR | answered by Dr. med. Ralf Berg
Good evening,
my wife, 35 years old, has been undergoing treatment since September for a rheumatic disease.
She started with 20 mg and has since been reduced to 5 mg. (Prednisolone)
She would very much like to receive Botox and hyaluronic acid injections, as she is used to.
Are there increased risks to be expected due to the cortisone intake, or is it safe to use Botox and hyaluronic acid during cortisone treatment?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards
Good evening dear inquirer.
In general, long-term high-dose corticosteroid therapy changes the connective tissue of the skin. It would be expected that higher doses of the mentioned medication would then be needed. In your case, however, the dose (5mg/day) is so low in relation to the body's own cortisone production that no changes are expected and your wife can continue her treatments as usual.
The goal of any long-term cortisone therapy is to reduce the dose below the so-called "Cushing threshold." This threshold is slightly different for everyone, but if you reach below 7.5mg/day or the ideal value of 5mg/day, you generally do not have to worry about the possible consequences of long-term cortisone therapy.
With Christmas greetings and best wishes, Dr. R. Berg.
