Cold drinks

Good morning!

I read somewhere that very cold drinks can also cause cancer.
Two hours ago, I drank a small, very cold bottle of drinking yogurt, straight from the fridge. The bottle was really ice cold.
I never drink such cold things, but still the question: Could that have been enough to cause cancer?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good morning Ralf,

You don't have to worry at all! Cold drinks do not cause cancer, they only promote it when there are other risk factors such as heavy smoking, regular alcohol consumption, or a diet high in spicy foods. However, one would have to drink ice-cold beverages for half a lifetime in order to develop cancer, and many people do so without getting sick.

So feel free to take drinks from the fridge that are not even ice-cold, at around seven degrees Celsius.
I wish you a nice weekend!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering, specialist in internal and general medicine
