Is it true that makeup clogs pores and can lead to pimples?

Dear Dermatologist,
My name is Sven Lange and I have a question regarding my skincare. Lately, I have been struggling with increased blemishes, especially pimples and blackheads on my face. I regularly use makeup to conceal my skin and improve my complexion. However, I have heard that makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts.
I am concerned that my daily makeup routine may be the cause of my skin problems. Although I make sure to thoroughly remove my makeup and cleanse my skin in the evening, I wonder if I am still burdening my skin.
Could my blemishes actually be caused by my makeup? Are there specific ingredients in makeup that are particularly bad for the skin? Should I switch my makeup products or completely avoid them to improve my skin issues?
I would greatly appreciate your assessment and hope for helpful tips on how to enhance my skincare routine to reduce my blemishes.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Sven Lange
Dear Sven Lange,
Thank you for your question regarding your skincare and the associated impurities such as pimples and blackheads in the facial area. It is very understandable that you are concerned about whether your daily makeup could be the cause of your skin problems. In fact, makeup, especially when not correctly applied or removed, can clog pores and thus lead to impurities.
There are various ingredients in makeup that can be problematic for the skin, such as mineral oils, parabens, silicones, or fragrances. These substances can impair the skin barrier, clog pores, and thus promote the formation of pimples. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to non-comedogenic formulations when purchasing makeup products, which have been specifically developed for oily skin and do not clog pores.
It is also important to thoroughly cleanse your skin before applying makeup to ensure that no residues of dirt or makeup remain on the skin. It is best to use mild cleansing products that do not further irritate or dry out your skin.
Furthermore, it is recommended not to leave makeup on the skin for too long. Remove the makeup thoroughly in the evening with a gentle cleansing product and then cleanse your skin again with a toner or cleansing lotion to ensure that all residues have been removed.
If you continue to struggle with impurities, it may also be advisable to consult a dermatologist to receive a precise diagnosis and possibly get an individual skincare recommendation. A dermatologist can also help you choose suitable makeup products for your skin and give you tips on how to optimize your skincare to reduce your impurities.
I hope this information helps you and that you find a way to improve your skin problems. If you have any further questions, I am happy to help.
Best regards,
Bernd Schlosser
