Can age spots be removed?

Dear Dermatologist,
My name is Günther Altmann and I have recently noticed an increase in age spots on my skin. These spots bother me and weigh heavily on me. They make me feel older than I actually am and I am concerned that they may continue to spread.
The age spots are mainly visible on my face, hands, and décolleté. They are dark brown to black in color and have an irregular shape. I have already tried to lighten them with various creams, but so far no treatment has really helped.
I am worried that the age spots will increase and make me feel even more uncomfortable in my own skin. That's why I am looking for a solution to have the age spots removed. I have heard of different methods such as laser therapy, cryotherapy, or chemical peels, but I am unsure which treatment would be best for me.
Can you please help me and tell me if age spots can actually be removed? What treatment options are available and what are the associated risks? How long does it take for the spots to disappear and how long does the result last? I would greatly appreciate your expertise and recommendations.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Günther Altmann
Dear Mr. Altmann,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding your age spots. It is understandable that you feel burdened by these skin changes and are looking for a solution to have them removed. Age spots, also known as lentigines seniles, are common pigment disorders caused by UV radiation and mainly occur in older age.
It is possible to remove age spots, but it is important to note that these are purely cosmetic procedures and in most cases there is no medical necessity for their removal. Before considering treatment, it is advisable to have the spots examined by a dermatologist to ensure that they are indeed age spots and not other skin changes.
There are various treatment options for removing age spots, including laser therapy, cryotherapy, chemical peels, as well as the use of special creams or serums. The choice of treatment depends on various factors such as the size and depth of the spots, your skin type, as well as your individual needs and preferences.
Laser therapy is a commonly used method for removing age spots, where high-energy light pulses are directed onto the skin to destroy the pigment cells. Cryotherapy uses cold to freeze the skin and lighten the pigmentation. Chemical peels can also be effective by removing the top layers of skin and reducing pigmentation.
It is important to note that with any treatment method, risks and side effects may occur, such as redness, swelling, blistering, or changes in pigmentation. Before deciding on a specific treatment, it is important to discuss potential risks and complications with your dermatologist.
The duration of treatment and the outcome depend on the chosen method, the depth of pigmentation, and your individual skin type. In most cases, several sessions are required to achieve the desired results. The result may vary from person to person, but generally, a lightening of the spots or a reduction in their size and intensity can be expected.
I recommend scheduling an appointment with a dermatologist in your area to receive a professional assessment of your age spots and to find the best treatment option for you. Your dermatologist will provide you with information on the various treatment options and assist you in making a decision.
I hope that my response has been helpful, and I am available to answer any further questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Bernd Schlosser, Dermatologist
