How can I best treat sunburn?

Dear Dermatologist,

My name is Irmgard Zollmann and I am reaching out to you as I urgently need help with treating my sunburn. A few days ago, I unfortunately spent too long in the sun without using sufficient sun protection. Now I have strong redness and pain on my skin, especially in the area of my shoulders and face.

I am worried that the sunburn could worsen and that long-term damage could remain on my skin. I have already tried applying cooling gels and lotions, but it seems to only bring temporary relief. Additionally, I am unsure if I should take certain medications to reduce the inflammation and support healing.

I would like to hear from you what specific treatment methods or home remedies you would recommend to effectively treat my sunburn. Are there specific creams or ointments I should use? Should I take certain medications to reduce inflammation? Are there certain skincare products to avoid to prevent further irritation?

Thank you in advance for your help and expertise in treating my sunburn.

Kind regards,
Irmgard Zollmann

Dear Mrs. Zollmann,

Thank you for your inquiry and your trust in my expertise. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from a severe sunburn. It is important that you take appropriate measures to support the healing of your skin and avoid long-term damage.

First and foremost, it is important that you protect your skin from further sun exposure. Therefore, make sure to avoid further sun exposure, wear loose clothing and a hat to protect your skin. Also avoid hot showers or baths, as this can worsen the inflammation.

In terms of treating the sunburn, I recommend continuing to apply cooling gels or lotions to the affected areas. Aloe Vera gel is a good option as it has anti-inflammatory and cooling properties. You can also apply moist compresses to help alleviate redness and pain.

There are also special creams and ointments that can help with treating sunburn. Products containing Dexpanthenol or hydrocortisone can reduce inflammation and speed up healing. However, make sure not to use products with alcohol or fragrances as these can further irritate the skin.

In some cases, pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can be used to alleviate pain. However, please consult your doctor before taking any medication to ensure they are suitable for you.

It is also important to keep your skin well hydrated to promote regeneration. Use a moisturizing lotion or cream to keep your skin supple. Also, drink plenty of water to support your body from the inside out.

I hope these tips help you in treating your sunburn. However, if the symptoms do not improve or worsen within a few days, I strongly recommend seeing a dermatologist in person. Stay patient and give your skin time to recover.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and I am always available for further questions.

Best regards,
