Which tax bracket
February 27, 2013 | 25,00 EUR | answered by Dr. Yanqiong Bolik
Hello, I am getting married in May. Now the question arises for us, tax class 4 or 3/5. I would like to have some information on that. However, I would like to avoid having to pay back taxes to the tax office at the end of the year. Thank you.
Dear inquirer,
Thank you for your inquiry, which I will gladly answer taking into consideration your input and the rules of this platform.
Please note that my explanation is based on the facts presented, and that adding, omitting, changing information, or the ambiguity of information can change the tax result.
If both spouses are subject to unlimited income tax liability in Germany and have income from employment, you can choose tax classes 4/4. The tax class combination 3 (higher earner) / 5 results in the family receiving more net income throughout the year, but may have to pay additional taxes after the tax assessment at the end of the calendar year. If you want to avoid the additional tax payment, the tax class combination 3 (higher earner) / 5 is not recommended.
Alternatively, you can also choose tax class combination 4/4 with a factor. Your local tax office will determine this based on the income situation of the spouses. This can often help avoid high additional tax payments that are common with the tax class combination 3/5.
I hope this information was helpful to you.
