Ask a tax advisor on the topic of Income tax return

Is there a deadline for filing the income tax return?

Dear tax advisor,

my name is Ben Weber and I work as a freelance graphic designer. This year, I have had some larger projects and I want to make sure that I submit my income tax return on time. However, I am unsure if there is a specific deadline that I need to meet.

Currently, I have gathered all the necessary documents for my income tax return, including my earnings from my freelance work, my expenses for materials and tools, as well as other tax-relevant receipts. Nevertheless, I am unsure of the deadline for submitting my tax return to the tax office in order to avoid possible fines or late fees.

I am worried that I might miss the deadline and that this could have negative consequences for me and my finances. Therefore, I would like to know from you if there is a specific deadline by which I need to submit my income tax return in order to avoid any issues with the tax office. If there is a deadline, what options do I have to meet it? Are there any options for an extension of the deadline?

Thank you in advance for your support and advice.

Sincerely,
Ben Weber

Dear Ben Weber,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your income tax return as a freelance graphic designer. It is very important that you submit your tax return on time to avoid possible penalties or late payment interest.

The regular deadline for filing the income tax return in Germany is July 31 of the following year, for example, July 31, 2022 for the tax year 2021. However, tax advisors like myself have the option to request an extension for our clients. This extension is usually granted until February 28 of the following year.

It is important to note that submitting your tax return on time not only avoids penalties but can also secure potential tax benefits. The sooner you submit your tax return, the sooner you may receive a refund of overpaid taxes.

To meet the deadline, I recommend that you gather your documents as early as possible and, if necessary, seek assistance from a tax advisor. Careful preparation can help you avoid mistakes and meet the deadline.

If you have difficulty meeting the deadline, you can contact me or another tax advisor to request an extension. Generally, the tax office will approve such an extension if there are valid reasons.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. If you have any further questions or need assistance with your tax return, I am happy to help.

Best regards,
Andreas Stricker
