Do I also have to declare income from mini-jobs in the income tax return?
July 10, 2023 | 55,00 EUR | answered by Eiko Hoffmann
Dear tax advisor,
I am Leon Kuhn and I have a question regarding my income tax return. Currently, I work in a full-time job and have an additional mini job to supplement my income. Now I am wondering if I need to declare the income from my mini job in my income tax return.
I am unsure because my mini job is a marginal employment where I do not earn more than 450 euros per month. I know that income tax is usually only paid above a certain amount, but I am not sure if my income from the mini job counts towards this.
My concern is that I may have to pay taxes back if I do not declare the income from the mini job in my tax return. On the other hand, I also want to make sure that I provide all relevant information and do not make any mistakes in my tax return.
Can you please tell me if I have to declare the income from my mini job in the income tax return and what impact this could have on my tax burden? Are there any exemptions or other regulations that I should be aware of?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Leon Kuhn
Dear Mr. Kuhn,
Thank you for your question regarding your income tax return. As a tax advisor, I can gladly assist you and provide you with some important information regarding your mini job and the income tax return.
In principle, you must declare the income from your mini job in your income tax return, even if it is a marginal employment. Even if you earn no more than 450 euros per month and therefore do not have to pay social security contributions, your income is still subject to income tax.
In Germany, there is a basic tax-free allowance, up to which no income tax has to be paid. For the year 2021, this basic tax-free allowance is 9,744 euros for singles and 19,488 euros for married couples filing jointly. If your total income from your main job and your mini job is below this basic tax-free allowance, you do not have to pay income tax.
However, it is important that you declare your income from the mini job in your tax return, as the tax office will consider and review all income. This way, you can ensure that you provide all relevant information and avoid any mistakes.
There are also deductions and regulations that you should consider. For example, there is the flat-rate deduction for advertising costs of 1,000 euros that you can claim. If you can prove that your actual advertising costs are higher, you can of course also declare them and deduct them from your taxes.
In summary, it is important that you declare the income from your mini job in your income tax return, even if you do not have to pay income tax. This way, you can ensure that you provide all relevant information and take advantage of possible tax benefits. If you have any further questions or need assistance with your tax return, I am happy to help.
