What damages does my household insurance cover?

Dear insurance lawyer,

My name is Lukas Endres and I have a question regarding my household insurance. I am aware that household insurance covers damages to my household belongings, but I am unsure which specific damages are covered by my insurance.

In my apartment, I have valuable furniture, electronic devices, and personal items that are very important to me. I am worried that in case of a burglary or water damage, my household belongings may not be adequately protected. I would like to know if my household insurance also covers damages from burglary, vandalism, fire, water, or storm.

Furthermore, I am wondering if damages caused by my own negligence would be covered by the insurance. For example, if I accidentally spill a glass of red wine on my expensive carpet or if my washing machine leaks and damages my parquet flooring.

I would like to take preventive measures to be best protected in case of any damages. Therefore, it is very important for me to know which damages are covered by my household insurance and if it would be advisable to take out additional insurance.

Could you please explain in detail which damages are covered by my household insurance and what steps I should possibly take to best protect my household belongings?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Lukas Endres

Dear Mr. Endres,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your household insurance. It is understandable that you are concerned about insuring your valuable furniture, electronic devices, and personal belongings. Household insurance is indeed an important protection to safeguard against damages to your household items.

In general, household insurance covers damages caused by burglary, vandalism, fire, water, and storm. This means that your insurance will assist you financially in the event of a break-in, malicious damage, fire damage, water damage (such as from a burst pipe), and storm damage (such as from falling trees).

Regarding your question about negligence on your part, it is important to know that most household insurance policies also cover damages caused by negligence. This means that damages resulting from your own accidental mistakes are also insured. For example, damages from spilled liquids or leaking washing machines.

To best protect your household items, I recommend first taking an inventory of your valuables and realistically assessing the value of your household items. This way, you can ensure that your insurance coverage is sufficient to cover all costs in case of damage.

Furthermore, make sure that your household insurance also covers elemental damages such as flooding or earthquakes, depending on the region you live in. If not, it may be worthwhile to take out additional insurance for this.

I also recommend regularly reviewing and potentially adjusting your insurance policy to ensure that you are optimally protected.

I hope I have answered your questions thoroughly and am available if you have any further inquiries.

Best regards,
Sophia Evers
