Ask a lawyer on the topic of Insurance law

Do I need to take out an accident insurance if I already have a private health insurance?

Dear Insurance Law Attorney,

My name is Roberta Köhler and I have a question regarding my insurance coverage. I am currently privately insured and I am wondering if it is necessary to also take out an accident insurance.

The situation is that I recently had a traffic accident, in which I fortunately only suffered minor injuries. My private health insurance covered the costs of medical treatment and medication. However, I am concerned whether an accident insurance would be useful to also be covered for possible follow-up costs.

My current situation is that I am not particularly knowledgeable about insurance matters and unsure if an accident insurance is necessary for me as a privately insured individual. I would like to know if there is a way to be adequately covered without additional accident insurance and what advantages and disadvantages such insurance could have for me.

So my question to you is: Do I have to take out an accident insurance if I already have a private health insurance? Are there alternatives or additions that I should consider to optimize my insurance coverage? I would greatly appreciate your expert assessment and possible solutions.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Kind regards,

Roberta Köhler

Dear Mrs. Köhler,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your insurance coverage. As an attorney specializing in insurance law, I understand that finding the optimal insurance protection can be a major challenge for many people, especially when it comes to the question of whether additional accident insurance is necessary if you already have private health insurance.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that private health insurance and accident insurance are two different types of insurance that cover different risks. Private health insurance primarily covers the costs of medical treatments in case of illness, while accident insurance is specifically tailored to cover accidents and can provide additional benefits such as disability benefits or accident pensions.

In your specific case, where you were fortunately only slightly injured and your private health insurance covered the costs, one could argue that accident insurance is not necessarily necessary. However, it is important to consider that accident insurance can provide additional security, especially in the event of serious injuries with long-term follow-up costs.

An alternative to accident insurance could be disability insurance, which pays a monthly pension in the event of permanent disability due to illness or accident. This insurance can be a valuable complement to private health insurance, as it also provides long-term financial security.

It is advisable to seek individual advice from an insurance expert to optimize your insurance coverage and find tailored solutions for your personal situation. An expert can help you weigh the pros and cons of accident insurance compared to other insurance products and support you in decision-making.

Finally, I would like to emphasize that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to whether accident insurance is necessary for you, as this depends on various factors such as your individual risk profile, financial background, and personal needs. Therefore, I strongly recommend seeking professional advice to find the insurance solution that is right for you.

I hope that my response is helpful to you and I am available for any further questions.

Sincerely,

Sophia Evers
