Bat flies into face, including eyes.
Hello,
Yesterday evening, I had a small collision with a bat while cycling, which flew into my face. I have no injury, but there was contact with one of my eyes.
As rabies can be transmitted through the mucous membranes, I got vaccinated against rabies as a precaution today. Unfortunately, it seems that my general practitioner has no experience with this vaccination, as I had to google the name of the vaccine myself. After today's dose, three more vaccinations with the active ingredient Rabipur are planned (a total of 4).
I have done some research myself and found that in post-exposure prophylaxis, rabies immunoglobulin should be given in addition to the vaccine (often 5 vaccinations are recommended). My question is whether the vaccine protection can still be built up in time without immunoglobulin in the current case. Should I ask my doctor about immunoglobulin?
Thank you in advance
Jens
