How can I protect my child from colds?

Dear pediatrician,
I am concerned about my child's health and would like to know how I can protect him from colds. My son, Max, is 6 years old and has been back in kindergarten for some time now. Since then, he has been frequently battling colds and I am worried about his immune system.
Max has had a runny nose, cough, and fever several times in the past few weeks, which is of course very stressful for him and for us as parents. We are already trying to feed him healthy, provide enough sleep, and give him plenty of exercise outdoors. However, he still seems to be susceptible to colds.
I wonder if there are additional measures we can take to strengthen his immune system and protect him from colds. Are there specific vitamin supplements or other remedies we can give him? Should we increase certain hygiene measures to contain the spread of viruses?
I would greatly appreciate your advice and recommendations on how we can best protect Max from colds. Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Georg Tiefental
Dear Mr. Tiefental,
It is understandable that you are concerned about the health of your son Max, especially when he frequently struggles with colds. Colds are indeed very common in children, especially when they attend kindergarten and come into contact with many other children. It is important to take measures to strengthen your son's immune system and protect him from colds.
A healthy diet, adequate sleep, and exercise outdoors are already very good measures to strengthen the immune system. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein is important to obtain all the necessary nutrients. Vitamin supplements can be a complement, especially in the winter months when the immune system is particularly challenged. Vitamin C and Vitamin D are known to support the immune system. However, discuss with your pediatrician first whether and which vitamin supplements are suitable for your son.
Hygiene measures are also crucial to contain the spread of viruses. This includes regular handwashing with soap, especially after blowing the nose, before eating, and after using the toilet. Avoid touching your face to reduce the risk of infection. Regularly airing out rooms can also help clean the air of viruses.
It is also important that your son consumes enough fluids to hydrate his body and keep the mucous membranes moist. This can help alleviate cold symptoms and support the healing process.
If colds occur frequently and your son struggles significantly with them, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician. The doctor can perform an individual examination and recommend further measures or treatments if necessary.
I hope these tips help you protect Max as best as possible from colds. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Best wishes for your son Max and his health.
Kind regards,
Hildegard Hirschfeld
