Which medications are recommended for an acute middle ear infection?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Jakob Fischer and I am reaching out to you because I am suffering from an acute middle ear infection and urgently need help. A few days ago, my right ear suddenly started hurting and I noticed that I was also having trouble with my hearing. The pain has become so intense that I can hardly sleep and I also have headaches. Additionally, I feel weak and exhausted in general.

I am very concerned about my health and wonder which medications are recommended in such cases. I have already tried to alleviate the pain with painkillers, but so far it has not helped much. I have also tried to keep my ear warm, but the symptoms are not getting better.

Can you please tell me which medications I should take to fight the infection and alleviate the pain? Are there any specific ear drops or antibiotics that you can recommend? How long does it usually take for the symptoms of a middle ear infection to subside?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide me with a response as soon as possible, as I am truly suffering from the symptoms and urgently need relief.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Jakob Fischer

Dear Jakob Fischer,

Thank you for your message and I am very sorry to hear that you are suffering from an acute middle ear infection. The symptoms you describe, such as sudden ear pain, hearing problems, headaches, weakness and fatigue, are typical for such an infection. It is important that you take care of your health immediately and seek treatment for the infection.

In general, antibiotics are prescribed for an acute middle ear infection to fight the bacterial infection. It is important that you see a doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis and get the appropriate antibiotic prescribed. Ear drops can also be helpful in relieving pain and treating the inflammation. These may contain anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving ingredients.

In addition to medication, it is important to keep the affected ear warm and get enough rest. Avoid putting too much strain on the ear, for example by exposure to loud noises or wearing headphones. Applying moist heat packs can also help alleviate the discomfort.

The duration until the symptoms of a middle ear infection subside can vary from person to person. Usually, the symptoms start to improve after a few days of antibiotic treatment. However, it is important to take the medication regularly and have the course of the infection monitored by a doctor.

I strongly recommend that you see an ear, nose, and throat specialist to receive an accurate diagnosis and start the right treatment. Please do not hesitate to seek help to alleviate your symptoms and protect your health.

I wish you a speedy recovery and am available for any further questions.

Best regards,
Roberta Weinert
