How can I protect my vocal cords from overuse?

Dear Doctor,

my name is Irmgard Knorr and I have been suffering from voice problems for a long time. I work in a profession that requires a lot of speaking, and I feel that my vocal cords are constantly being strained. Often, it feels like my voice quickly tires out and I have difficulty expressing myself clearly.

Lately, I have also been experiencing more frequent hoarseness and a scratchy feeling in my throat. I am worried that my vocal cords could be permanently damaged if I do not take action. Therefore, I would like to know from you what measures I can take to protect my vocal cords and prevent long-term damage.

I already drink a lot of water to keep my vocal cords moist enough, and I try to rest my voice when possible. Are there specific exercises or techniques that I can use to strengthen my vocal cords and protect them from strain? Should I change my diet or are there certain remedies I can take to support my voice?

I am very grateful for your help and hope that you can give me some tips on how to keep my vocal cords healthy. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Irmgard Knorr

Dear Mrs. Knorr,

Thank you for your message and for trusting in my expertise as an ear, nose, and throat doctor. I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing voice problems and are concerned about possible damage to your vocal cords. It is important to take measures early on to protect your voice and avoid long-term damage.

First of all, it is good to hear that you are already drinking plenty of water to keep your vocal cords adequately hydrated. Sufficient hydration is indeed important to keep the vocal cords elastic and prevent strain. It is also recommended to maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support your voice.

To strengthen your vocal cords and protect them from strain, you can practice specific vocal exercises and techniques. For example, you can regularly do breathing exercises to improve your lung capacity and increase support for your voice. Targeted training of articulation and resonance can also help relieve strain on the vocal cords and make your voice clearer and more distinct.

Furthermore, it is advisable to take breaks from speaking and rest your voice, especially in situations that require a lot of talking. Try to avoid loud environments and not to strain your voice. If possible, you can also try to reduce the use of your voice to give it some rest.

There are also special products such as vocal sprays or lozenges that can help care for and support the vocal cords. These can be used in consultation with a doctor to protect and strengthen your voice.

I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat doctor to have your vocal cords thoroughly examined and receive individual recommendations for your situation. A specialist can also provide specific therapy options to protect and maintain the health of your voice.

I hope these tips are helpful to you and wish you all the best for your voice and health. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Roberta Weinert
