Which home remedies help against sore throat?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Andreas Schröter and I am currently suffering from severe sore throat. The symptoms started two days ago with a slight scratching in my throat and have now developed into a burning pain that makes it difficult for me to swallow and speak. I have already taken sore throat tablets, but without any noticeable improvement.
I am concerned that the sore throat could be caused by a bacterial infection, as I have also been experiencing difficulty swallowing and mild fever in the past few days. Since I currently do not have the opportunity to visit a doctor in person, I wanted to ask if there are any home remedies that could help me with my sore throat.
I have already tried to alleviate my symptoms with warm sage tea and a gargle solution made from chamomile tea, but the results have been only temporary so far. Are there any other home remedies I could try to alleviate my sore throat? Or would you recommend that I see a doctor for a precise diagnosis and possibly a medicinal treatment?
Thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to your recommendations.
Yours sincerely,
Andreas Schröter
Dear Andreas Schröter,
Thank you for your message and trust in my medical expertise. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from severe sore throat and that the measures taken so far have not provided the desired relief. Sore throats can have various causes, ranging from a simple cold to a viral infection or a bacterial infection such as tonsillitis.
It is always difficult to make an accurate diagnosis over the internet, as a physical examination and possibly further tests are necessary. In your case, especially if you are also experiencing difficulty swallowing and fever, it would be advisable to see a doctor to determine the cause of your sore throat. A doctor can then recommend a specific treatment, whether it be antibiotics for a bacterial infection or other medications for other causes.
Nevertheless, I can recommend some home remedies that may help alleviate your sore throat. In addition to the warm sage tea and gargling solution made from chamomile tea that you mentioned, you can also try making warm neck wraps with potatoes or onions. Inhalations with essential oils such as eucalyptus or tea tree oil can also help alleviate pain and clear the airways.
Furthermore, it is important to drink plenty of fluids to keep the mucous membranes in the throat moist and support the healing process. It is best to avoid smoky rooms and rest your voice to reduce irritation of the mucous membranes.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, I strongly recommend seeing a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
I hope that my recommendations help you and wish you a speedy recovery.
Best regards,
Ralf Ullmann
