What measures help with acute otitis media?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am reaching out to you as I am suffering from an acute middle ear infection and am unsure of what measures could help me. My name is Karl Maier and I am 35 years old. Three days ago, my ear suddenly started to hurt severely and I felt like it was blocked. Additionally, I feel a throbbing sensation in the ear and have muffled hearing on that side. I have already tried taking pain medication, but the pain has not improved. I also tried treating my ear with warm compresses, but that did not provide any relief either.

I am very worried as the pain is unbearable and I fear that the infection could spread further. Therefore, I am wondering what measures could help me with acute middle ear infection. Are there specific medications that could alleviate the inflammation? Should I continue treating my ear with warm compresses or are there other ways to reduce the swelling? When should I seek medical attention if the pain does not subside?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide me with some advice on how to deal with my acute middle ear infection. It is important to me to alleviate the pain and avoid any potential complications.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Karl Maier

Dear Mr. Maier,

Thank you for your message and for trusting in my expertise as an ear, nose, and throat doctor. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from acute otitis media and that the pain is so unbearable.

The symptoms you described, such as sudden severe ear pain, a feeling of blockage in the ear, throbbing sensation, and muffled hearing, indeed point towards otitis media. This inflammation can have various causes, such as an infection by bacteria or viruses. It is important that you take appropriate measures to alleviate the symptoms and avoid potential complications.

Regarding the treatment of acute otitis media, there are various options. First and foremost, it is important that you see a doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis and start appropriate treatment. Pain medication is usually prescribed for otitis media to relieve the pain. These can have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. Additionally, decongestant nasal drops can help reduce the feeling of blockage in the ear.

The use of warm compresses can also be helpful in reducing swelling and promoting blood circulation. You can also try rinsing your ear with warm olive oil to reduce potential pressure in the ear. However, it is important that you proceed with caution and do not cause any injuries to the ear.

If the pain persists or worsens despite these measures, you should definitely see a doctor. Untreated otitis media can lead to serious complications, such as a ruptured eardrum or spreading of the infection to other areas in the ear.

Lastly, I would advise you to drink plenty of fluids, rest, and take care of your health. A balanced diet and sufficient sleep can help strengthen your immune system and support healing.

I hope my advice is helpful to you and wish you a speedy recovery. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if you have any further questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Jessica Jung
