Which home remedies help with sore throats?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Erwin Schottmann and I have been suffering from severe sore throat for several days. The pain is particularly unbearable when swallowing and I feel like it is getting worse.
I have already tried various home remedies, such as warm teas with honey, gargling with salt water, and throat lozenges. Unfortunately, these measures have not shown any relieving effect so far.
I am worried that it could be a more serious illness and I am wondering if I should see a doctor. Are there any other home remedies that could help with sore throat? Or should I rather make an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat specialist to investigate the cause of my symptoms?
Thank you in advance for your response and support.
Sincerely,
Erwin Schottmann
Dear Mr. Schottmann,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from severe sore throat and that the home remedies you have tried so far have not brought the desired relief. It is important to always consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen, in order to clarify the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
Sore throats can have various causes, such as inflammation of the tonsils (tonsillitis), pharyngitis, laryngitis, or an infection with viruses or bacteria. In some cases, other conditions like reflux or allergies can also cause sore throat.
If home remedies are not effective enough, it may be advisable to see a doctor. An otolaryngologist specializes in diseases of the ear, nose, and throat and can investigate the cause of your sore throat more precisely. The doctor will usually first examine your symptoms in detail, possibly take a throat swab to rule out a bacterial infection, and if necessary, arrange further tests such as an ultrasound or blood test.
In addition to the home remedies you have mentioned, there are other measures that can help with sore throat. These include sucking on lozenges or inhaling essential oils. Warm throat wraps or humid air can also soothe the mucous membranes in the throat area.
It is important to drink enough fluids to keep the mucous membranes moist and alleviate irritation. Also, avoid smoke, dry air, and excessive strain on the vocal cords.
I recommend that you make an appointment with an otolaryngologist to have your symptoms evaluated and receive suitable treatment. Sore throats can have various causes, and an accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective therapy.
I wish you a speedy recovery and am happy to answer any further questions you may have.
Best regards,
Otto Karpinski
