What effects does smoking have on the lungs?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Bernhard Mellert and I am reaching out to you with a question regarding my lung health. For many years, I have been smoking regularly and recently I have noticed that I have to cough more often when breathing and have become more short of breath. I am worried about my lungs and would like to learn more about the effects smoking has on my respiratory system.
