Which symptoms can indicate a curvature of the spine?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Maria Rademacher and I am reaching out to you because I have been suffering from back pain for some time and I am concerned that it may be indicative of a curvature of the spine.
I am 35 years old and work in an office where I spend the majority of the day sitting. About six months ago, I first noticed that my back was hurting when sitting or standing, and sometimes it also feels stiff. Lately, I have also noticed that my shoulders and hips are not aligned properly and that my back may have a slight lateral curvature.
In addition to the pain, I sometimes feel that my legs are different lengths and that I have balance issues when walking or standing. Furthermore, I feel that my posture has worsened overall and that I can no longer hold myself up as straight as before.
I am very concerned that these symptoms may be indicative of a curvature of the spine and I am wondering what I can do about it. What are the actual signs of a curvature of the spine and what measures can be taken to treat or alleviate it?
Thank you in advance for your help and expertise.
Sincerely,
Maria Rademacher
Dear Mrs. Rademacher,
Thank you for your message and your trust. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from back pain and are worried about a possible curvature of the spine. It is important to investigate such symptoms and take appropriate measures to alleviate your discomfort and prevent long-term damage.
The symptoms you described, such as pain when sitting or standing, stiffness in the back, a possible lateral curvature of the spine, uneven leg lengths, balance problems, and a changed posture, could indeed be signs of a curvature of the spine. Such curvature of the spine is also known as scoliosis and can have various causes, including genetic factors, incorrect posture, one-sided strain, or even a wrong sitting position over a longer period, as is often the case with office work.
To make an accurate diagnosis and determine if scoliosis is actually present, it would be advisable to consult an orthopedist and undergo a thorough examination. The doctor will likely perform a physical examination, check your posture, possibly take X-rays, and conduct further tests to make a precise diagnosis.
Depending on the severity of scoliosis and individual symptoms, various treatment options can be considered. These include physiotherapeutic measures to strengthen the back muscles, specific exercises to improve posture, wearing a back brace to support the spine, or in severe cases, surgical procedures to correct the spine.
It is important not to hesitate to seek medical advice and take your symptoms seriously. The earlier scoliosis is detected, the better treatment options can be taken to alleviate symptoms and prevent potential complications.
I hope that my response helps you and I am happy to assist you with any further questions or support. I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.
Best regards,
