Herniated disc?? Or just a pinched nerve?

My son-in-law, 29 years old and physically fit, injured his back while water skiing on holiday, specifically while jerking off. That is, he has been experiencing strong pain in the lower back since then. His fear now is that it could be a herniated disc. Since he is abroad and only returning on Monday, his question now is what he can do. He has not had any back problems before.
Thank you for your response.
Hello,
Whether it's a herniated disc or a pinched nerve, the next steps depend on the symptoms. As long as only pain is present, you only need to treat the pain. Further treatment or investigation is not essential at the moment, but can be done later without missing anything.
Emergency situations arise with symptoms of paralysis, such as loss of strength in the leg, involuntary collapsing, or similar.
If you experience sensory disturbances like tingling in the leg, numbness, etc., seek clarification, preferably within 48 hours.
Do you have any further questions?
As you describe it, it should suffice for your son to take pain medication like Ibuprofen (maximum 1600 mg per day) and possibly Paracetamol (maximum 3000 mg per day), which is available worldwide.
Best regards,
Dr. Schaaf
