How can I protect my eyes from the screen?

Dear Doctor,

I am Max Schäfer and I work many hours in front of the screen every day. Lately, I have noticed increasing problems with my eyes. They feel dry and irritated, and I often have headaches after long days of work on the computer. I am concerned about my eye health and wonder how I can protect my eyes from the strain of the screen.

I have tried taking regular breaks and relaxing my eyes in between, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I do not wear glasses and I have no pre-existing eye conditions. However, I want to be proactive in protecting my eyes and avoiding long-term damage.

Can you please give me advice on how to protect my eyes from the screen? Are there specific exercises or tools that can help relieve strain on my eyes? Should I consider getting a special computer glasses or getting regular eye exams to detect possible issues early?

Thank you in advance for your support and advice. Your help is very important to me, as my eye health is of great importance.

Sincerely,
Max Schäfer

Dear Max Schäfer,

Thank you for your message and your trust in my expertise as an eye doctor. It is understandable that you are concerned about your eye health, especially when you spend many hours in front of a screen every day. Dry and irritated eyes as well as headaches can indeed be signs of so-called "Computer Vision Syndrome", which are complaints caused by the intensive use of screens.

I am glad to hear that you have already tried to take regular breaks and relax your eyes in between. These are important measures to prevent eye strain. However, there are further steps you can take to protect your eyes from the strain of the screen.

One option is the so-called 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, you should look into the distance for at least 20 seconds to relieve your eyes. This reduces the strain on the eye muscles. It is also important to place the screen at an appropriate distance, ideally about 50-70 centimeters away from the eyes. A screen glasses with blue light filter can also be helpful in reducing eye strain.

It may also be worthwhile to consider a special computer glasses that protects your eyes from the blue light of the screen. These glasses can help alleviate the symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome. Furthermore, I recommend that you have regular eye examinations to detect potential problems early.

It is important that you take your eye health seriously and take proactive measures to protect your eyes from the strains of the screen. If the symptoms persist or worsen, I strongly recommend that you make an appointment with an eye doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis and individual treatment recommendations.

I hope that my advice will help you and that you can successfully protect your eye health. If you have any further questions, I am happy to assist.

Best regards,
Tobias Helbig
