Ask a doctor on the topic of Oncology

Which examinations are useful for early detection of cancer?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Luisa Stolzheim and recently, I have been increasingly involved in the topic of cancer prevention. I have heard that certain screenings for the early detection of cancer can be very beneficial in identifying a disease early and improving chances of recovery.

I am 45 years old and do not have a family history of cancer. However, I am concerned about whether I am taking sufficient precautions for my health and whether I may already be affected by cancer without knowing it.

So far, I have not undergone regular screenings as I am uncertain about which screenings would be appropriate for a woman of my age. Therefore, I would like to learn from you which screenings you would recommend for the early detection of cancer. For example, should I undergo regular mammograms even though I do not have a family history of breast cancer? Or are other screenings such as colonoscopies or skin screenings possibly more important at my age?

It would be very helpful if you could provide me with specific recommendations on which screenings I should consider in the future to detect my risk for cancer early and take action accordingly.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Luisa Stolzheim

Dear Mrs. Stolzheim,

Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in cancer prevention. It is very important that you engage with this topic and take active measures to protect your health. As an oncologist, I can provide you with some recommendations on which screenings for cancer detection may be beneficial for someone of your age.

Firstly, it is positive to hear that you do not have a family history of cancer. While this reduces the risk of developing cancer, it does not mean that you should not take preventive measures.

At your age, 45 years old, certain types of cancer are particularly relevant. I recommend regular mammograms for women of your age for the early detection of breast cancer. Even if you do not have a family history, it may still be beneficial to undergo this screening as breast cancer is a common cancer in women. Regular mammograms every 1-2 years can help in early detection of any potential illness.

Furthermore, colonoscopies for the early detection of colon cancer are important from the age of 50. Since you are already addressing this issue, you may also consider having a colonoscopy done earlier. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers globally, and an early diagnosis can significantly improve chances of recovery.

Skin screenings for the early detection of skin cancer are also important, especially if you have many moles or spend a lot of time in the sun. Regular examinations by a dermatologist can help in early detection and treatment of skin cancer.

In addition to these specific screenings, it is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking, and adequate sun protection can also help reduce the risk of cancer.

I hope this information is helpful to you and provides you with specific recommendations for your cancer prevention. If you have any further questions or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Gerd Herrmann
