Ask a doctor on the topic of Occupational medicine

What protective measures are in place in the workplace against Covid-19?

Dear occupational physician,

My name is Babette Hausdorf and I work in an office building with many colleagues. Lately, I have been increasingly worried about my health as the Covid-19 pandemic is still present and infection rates are not decreasing.

I am wondering what protective measures can be taken in the workplace against Covid-19 to minimize the risk of infection. So far, we all wear masks, maintain distance from each other, and regularly disinfect our hands. But is that enough? Are there any additional measures we can take to protect ourselves and our colleagues?

I am particularly concerned because I come into contact with many different people and cannot always control whether they adhere to hygiene rules. Therefore, I would like to know if there are any additional protective measures that we can implement in the workplace to minimize the risk of Covid-19 infection.

Thank you in advance for your help and for answering my question.

Sincerely,
Babette Hausdorf

Dear Mrs. Hausdorf,

Thank you for your question and your interest in occupational medicine in relation to Covid-19. It is understandable that you are concerned about your health, especially in an office environment where you come into contact with many different people on a daily basis. It is important to take appropriate protective measures to minimize the risk of contracting the Coronavirus.

First and foremost, it is commendable that you and your colleagues are already wearing masks, maintaining distance, and regularly disinfecting your hands. These measures are very important and significantly contribute to containing the spread of the virus. However, there are additional protective measures that can be implemented in the workplace to minimize the risk of infection.

For example, one option could be to install air filters or air purifiers in the office spaces. These can help improve air quality and thus reduce the risk of transmission of the virus through aerosols. It is also important to regularly ventilate to ensure good air circulation in the rooms.

Furthermore, you and your colleagues could be tested for the Coronavirus at regular intervals to detect infections early and take appropriate measures. The option for remote work or flexible working hours can also help reduce the number of people in the office and thus decrease the risk of infection.

It is also important that all employees are regularly informed and sensitized about the current hygiene rules. Training and information on the correct use of masks, disinfectants, and other protective measures can help strengthen awareness of the importance of hygiene.

Overall, it is important for all stakeholders in the workplace to work together and ensure that the applicable protective measures are followed. Only in this way can the risk of contracting Covid-19 be minimized.

I hope that this information is helpful to you and wish you all the best for your health.

Sincerely,
Erika Keck
