Toddler cough vomiting

Hello Dr. Med Berg.

We were in touch regarding the leukocytes in the urine of my 2-year-old daughter, which we measured with a strip. I would need some advice from you again regarding our child.

Our little one vomited suddenly on Sunday, after having a good breakfast. After vomiting, she was feeling great again. She was in a good mood.

The following days were also fine. She occasionally said she had a stomach ache, but when we asked her again, she said she didn't have any stomach ache.

Today she was in a good mood as well. For dinner, she ate a slice of bread and a yogurt.

Suddenly she started coughing. Three times in a row, and then she vomited.

Yesterday we did a urine test with a strip, which showed that she has leukocytes in her urine. But nitrates were negative and glucose as well.

Could the vomiting be caused by the coughing, or do you think a doctor should take a look at her?

I am somewhat worried about this, as we lack experience in this matter.

Dr. med. Ralf Berg

Hello, and good evening.

It seems that your daughter is fighting an infection. Although it's not a severe case with fever and fatigue, I think it's better for you to have the little one seen by a doctor. As for the findings from the urine test strip, I would recommend having it rechecked by a doctor using their test strips.

Regarding the cough: Yes, severe coughing fits can sometimes lead to vomiting. Nausea can be caused by pressure from the diaphragm on the stomach during intense coughs, as well as by irritation and pressure on the vagus nerve.

You don't have to worry too much as long as your daughter's overall condition is still good. I would recommend having her seen by a colleague next week if the condition persists.

With best regards,
R. Berg.
