Ask a doctor on the topic of Gynecology

Is it normal for my menstruation to be so painful?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Franceska Hausdorf and I am contacting you because I am concerned about my menstrual cycle. For the past few months, I have been experiencing severe pain during my period, which sometimes even hinders me from carrying out my daily activities. I have tried taking pain medication, but it seems to only provide temporary relief.

I am 28 years old and have never had any issues with my period before. Normally, my period lasts about five to seven days and is quite regular. However, recently the pain has been so intense that I can barely move. I have also noticed that my bleeding has become heavier and darker.

I am worried that something may be wrong and wondering if it is normal for my period to be so painful. Are there possible reasons for this sudden change? Should I be concerned and see a doctor? Are there possible treatment options that could help me alleviate the pain?

Thank you in advance for your help and support. I look forward to your expert opinion and advice.

Sincerely,
Franceska Hausdorf

Dear Franceska Hausdorf,

Thank you for your message and trust in my expertise as a gynecologist. I am sorry to hear that you have been experiencing such severe pain during your menstruation in recent months. It is important to take such symptoms seriously and have them further evaluated.

Severe menstrual pain can have various causes. A common cause is dysmenorrhea, which is characterized by cramping pain during menstruation. This can be caused by contractions of the uterus that obstruct blood flow and lead to pain. Changes in the intensity and duration of menstruation as well as darker blood may indicate hormonal changes or other underlying conditions.

Therefore, it is advisable for you to see a specialist to further evaluate your symptoms. The doctor will likely conduct a thorough medical history to learn more about your complaints. Further tests such as an ultrasound examination or blood work may be necessary to rule out or confirm possible causes.

Depending on the diagnosis, there are various treatment options that can help alleviate the pain. These may include taking pain medication, relaxing the uterine muscles, hormonal therapies, or alternative treatments such as acupuncture or relaxation techniques.

It is important not to hesitate to see a doctor to have your symptoms evaluated and receive appropriate treatment. Do not ignore the pain as it can affect your daily life and may also indicate an underlying condition.

I hope that my response was helpful to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or need assistance.

Best regards,
