Ask a tax advisor on the topic of Tax return

Do I also have to pay taxes on income from a mini job?

Dear tax consultant,

My name is Marie Hirschfeld and I work part-time in a mini job on a 450 euro basis alongside my main job. So far, I have never declared my income from the mini job, as I assumed that it is tax-free. However, I have recently heard from friends that income from a mini job also needs to be taxed.

I am worried that I may have to pay taxes retrospectively and would therefore like to clarify whether I actually have to declare my income from the mini job. I have heard that there is also a tax-free allowance for mini jobs - does this apply to my case?

Could you please explain to me how the taxation of income from a mini job works and whether I have to pay taxes in my specific case? Are there possibly ways to save on taxes or minimize the tax burden?

Thank you in advance for your support.

Kind regards,
Marie Hirschfeld

Dear Marie Hirschfeld,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the taxation of income from a mini job. I am happy to provide you with detailed information on this topic.

In general, income from a mini job up to 450 euros per month is tax-free. This means that you do not have to pay taxes on this income. However, there is an exception to the mini job rule: If you are working in addition to your main job and earn more than 450 euros per month in total, you must pay taxes on the income from the mini job.

In your specific case, where you work in a mini job in addition to your main job, you should check if your total income from both activities exceeds the tax-free amount of 450 euros per month. If this is the case, you must pay taxes on the income from the mini job. The mini job is classified in tax class VI and taxed at a flat rate of 2%.

It is important to note that the tax exemption for mini jobs only applies if you are exclusively working in a mini job and have no other income. However, if you also have a main job in addition to your mini job, this tax exemption does not apply.

There are ways to save taxes or minimize the tax burden. These include, for example, deductible expenses that you can claim to reduce your taxable income. Special expenses or extraordinary burdens can also reduce your tax burden.

I recommend contacting a tax advisor to discuss your individual situation and explore possible tax-saving opportunities. I am also available for further questions in my online consultation hours.

I hope that this information has been helpful to you and wish you success in resolving your tax matters.

Best regards,

Quentin Reuter
