How can I find out which tax bracket I am currently in?

Dear tax advisor,
My name is Karl Schmitt and I am currently a bit confused about my tax class. I recently got married and I am wondering what tax class I am now in. Before the wedding, I was in tax class I, as I was single. My wife was also in tax class I. Now I am wondering if my tax class has changed after the wedding and how I can find out.
I am worried that I may have been classified in the wrong tax class and may have to pay too much taxes as a result. Therefore, it is important for me to know what tax class I am currently in, in order to possibly make a change if necessary.
Could you please explain to me how I can find out what tax class I am in now and if it is possible to change it if needed? I want to make sure that I am not paying more taxes than necessary and would greatly appreciate your help on this matter.
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Karl Schmitt
Dear Mr. Schmitt,
Thank you for your question regarding your tax class after your marriage. I understand that it is important to know the correct tax class in order to avoid paying unnecessary taxes. After your wedding, the tax class for you and your wife usually changes. As a married person, you have the option to choose between tax classes IV/IV, III/V or IV with a factor.
In your case, since you and your wife were both in tax class I before the wedding, you were automatically classified into tax class IV after the wedding. Tax class IV is the most common tax class for married couples, where both partners are classified into the same class. The income of both partners is added together and the tax burden is evenly distributed between both.
To find out which tax class you are currently in, you can either contact your tax office or take a look at your payroll statement. It should be noted there in which tax class you are classified. If you find that you have been classified into the wrong tax class, it is possible to change it. For this, you need to submit an application for a tax class change to the tax office. This is usually possible once a year, usually until November 30 for the following calendar year.
It is important to carefully consider the tax class choice, as it has an impact on the amount of income tax and thus on your net income. Consulting a tax advisor can help you find the right tax class combination for you and your wife to make the most of tax benefits.
I hope this information helps you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Best regards,
Dirk Voigt
