Can I switch to tax class I as a part-time employee?

Dear tax advisor,
My name is Wolfgang Voss and I am currently working part-time as an employee. I am classified in tax class VI, as I also have a side job. Due to my personal situation, I would like to switch to tax class I in order to benefit from tax advantages. However, I am unsure if a switch is possible and what steps I need to take.
My concern is that I may be set in tax class VI due to my side job and therefore not eligible for a switch. However, I would like to improve my tax situation and am willing to take all necessary steps to move to the more favorable tax class I.
Can you please explain to me if it is possible for part-time employees like me to switch to tax class I? What requirements need to be met and what steps are necessary? Are there any alternatives or ways to optimize my tax situation if a switch is not possible?
Thank you in advance for your assistance and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Wolfgang Voss
Dear Mr. Voss,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding a possible switch from tax class VI to tax class I as a part-time employee with a mini job. I would be happy to explain to you the requirements for such a switch and the necessary steps.
In principle, it is possible to switch to tax class I as a part-time employee, even if you are currently classified in tax class VI. However, the switch is subject to certain requirements. In your case, you must ensure that you only have one employment contract and no other additional income that would lead to being classified in tax class VI.
To make the switch from tax class VI to tax class I, you must submit an application for income tax reduction to the tax office. In this application, you indicate that you only have one employment contract and thus meet the requirements for classification in tax class I. The tax office will review your application and make a decision on the reclassification.
It is important that you attach all necessary documents and evidence to the application to ensure smooth processing. These may include employment contracts, salary statements, and possibly proof of your mini job.
If the switch from tax class VI to tax class I is not possible, there may be alternatives to optimize your tax situation. In this case, it may be advisable to seek individual advice from a tax advisor to maximize possible tax benefits and minimize your tax burden.
I hope that this information has been helpful to you and I am available for any further questions you may have.
Best regards,
Friedhelm Peters, Tax Advisor
