What tax return deadline applies to me as a freelancer?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Anneliese Schulze and I work as a freelance translator. Last year, I earned my income through my self-employment and now I would like to file my tax return. Unfortunately, I am unsure about the tax filing deadline for freelancers.

I have heard that the general deadline for filing tax returns is July 31 of the following year. However, I have also heard about an extended deadline for freelancers, which is until February 28 of the year after next. Is this correct and which deadline applies in my case?

Furthermore, I am unsure about which documents and receipts I need for my tax return. I keep regular records of my income and expenses, but I have heard that certain receipts such as travel expenses or work equipment need to be kept separately.

I am also concerned that I may not be taking full advantage of tax benefits or deductions. Are there any specific tax tips or advice that are particularly relevant for freelancers like myself?

Could you please inform me of the current tax filing deadline for freelancers, explain which documents I need for the tax return, and possibly give me tips on how to optimize my tax burden?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Anneliese Schulze

Dear Mrs. Schulze,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the tax return deadline for freelancers, as well as the required documents and possible tax tips. I will gladly answer all your questions in detail.

The general deadline for submitting the tax return is indeed July 31 of the following year. However, freelancers have an extended deadline, which goes up to February 28 of the year after next. This means that as a freelance translator, you can submit your tax return for the previous year by February 28 of the following year. It is advisable, however, to prepare and submit the tax return early to avoid any potential problems or delays.

In terms of the required documents for your tax return as a freelancer, it is important to carefully keep all relevant receipts for your income and expenses. This includes invoices, receipts, bank statements, mileage logs (if you want to claim travel expenses), and receipts for work materials. It is advisable to keep these documents organized and complete in order to accurately and completely fill out your tax return.

As a freelancer, you have various options to optimize your tax burden and fully utilize tax benefits or deductions. An important tip is to accurately document and justify all work-related expenses. This includes not only travel costs and work materials, but also training expenses, office supplies, phone and internet costs, and any insurance premiums. Furthermore, as a freelancer, you can also claim the use of a home office for tax purposes if you conduct your professional activities there.

It is advisable to inform yourself early on about tax options and optimization possibilities in order to minimize your tax burden and improve your financial situation. I am happy to answer any further questions and support you in preparing and submitting your tax return as a freelance translator.

Best regards,
