Ask a tax advisor on the topic of Income tax return

What happens if I submit my income tax return late?

Dear tax advisor,

My name is Johann Falk and I have a question regarding my income tax return. Unfortunately, this year I am having some difficulties compiling my tax documents in a timely manner and submitting them by the deadline. Now I am worried about what could happen if I cannot meet the submission deadline.

The situation is as follows: Last year, I earned income from employment as well as from capital gains. Additionally, I have various deductible expenses and extraordinary burdens that I would like to claim for tax purposes. Unfortunately, due to lack of time and other obligations, I am unable to submit my tax return on time.

My main concern is to learn about the possible consequences of submitting my income tax return late. I am worried that I may face penalties or other negative consequences. Are there options to request an extension of the deadline or are there other alternatives to avoid penalties?

I greatly appreciate your assistance and thank you in advance for your support on this important matter.

Sincerely,
Johann Falk

Dear Mr. Falk,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your income tax return. It is understandable that you are concerned if you are unable to meet the deadline. But don't worry, I can help you in this situation.

First of all, it is important to know that the deadline for filing the income tax return is usually July 31 of the following year. If you are unable to meet this deadline, you have the option to request an extension. You must do this in writing to the tax office and explain why you are unable to meet the deadline. Usually, the tax office will grant an extension if the reasons are plausible.

However, it is important to note that an extension is only granted for a limited period of time. If you are unable to meet this extended deadline as well, you may incur late payment interest and penalties. These can vary depending on the amount of taxable income and the duration of the delay.

To avoid penalties, it is advisable to apply for an extension in a timely manner and gather your tax documents as soon as possible. If you need help with preparing your tax return, I am happy to assist you. We can also discuss further details in a personal meeting if you wish.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am at your disposal.

Best regards,
