Ask a lawyer on the topic of Social security law

Can I pay into the pension insurance as a mini-jobber?

Dear lawyer,

My name is Christian Lenzner and I am currently working as a minijobber in a small company. Due to the marginal employment, I earn a maximum of 450 euros per month and am therefore exempt from compulsory pension insurance. However, I am concerned about my future and wonder if it is possible for me to voluntarily pay into the pension insurance in order to increase my future pension.

I am 28 years old and have not paid much into the pension insurance so far, as I have only recently started working. I am worried that I will not be sufficiently secured in old age if I continue to work only as a minijobber and do not pay any pension contributions.

Therefore, my question to you as an expert in social security law: Is it possible for a minijobber to voluntarily pay into the pension insurance and thus increase my pension entitlements? What requirements would I have to meet for this and how much would the contributions be that I would have to pay as a minijobber?

I would appreciate it if you could help me with this important decision and show me possible solutions. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Christian Lenzner

Dear Mr. Lenzner,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the possibility of voluntarily contributing to the pension insurance as a minijobber in order to increase your pension entitlements. It is understandable that you are thinking about your future and financial security in old age. I am happy to provide you with a detailed answer to your question.

In principle, minijobbers have the option to voluntarily contribute to the pension insurance to increase their pension entitlements. This can be beneficial in order to receive a higher pension in old age and better secure your financial future. If you are working as a minijobber and are therefore exempt from pension insurance obligations, you have the option to make voluntary contributions.

In order to make voluntary contributions to the pension insurance, certain requirements must be met. This includes, among other things, that you have reached the age of 16 and that you are not already insured elsewhere. Since you are already 28 years old and have not contributed much to the pension insurance so far, you meet these requirements.

The amount of contributions you would need to make as a minijobber in order to voluntarily contribute to the pension insurance depends on various factors. These include your income, age, and desired pension benefits. There are different ways to calculate the contributions and determine which options are suitable for you.

It would be advisable to seek advice from an expert in social insurance law to find the best solution for you. A lawyer or pension advisor can help you analyze your individual situation and take the appropriate steps.

I hope that this information has been helpful to you and I am available for any further questions you may have. It is important to start planning for your retirement early and make the right decisions to ensure your financial security in old age.

Best regards,
Friedhelm Schröter
