Ask a lawyer on the topic of Insurance law

Which types of insurance are mandatory in Germany?

Dear insurance lawyer,

My name is Lina Kleine and I have a question regarding the obligation to take out certain insurances in Germany. I have recently heard from various sources that there are certain insurances that are legally required, while others are optional. As I am currently in a phase of reorientation and need to closely monitor my financial budget, I am very concerned about whether I may have neglected to take out legally required insurances.

In the current situation: I am an employee in a medium-sized company and have health insurance that was taken out through my employer. I also have liability insurance for personal use to be covered in case of damage. Now I am wondering if there are any other insurances that I must legally take out to protect myself from potential risks.

My concerns are that I may have overlooked important insurances that could threaten my financial existence in case of emergency. Therefore, it would be very helpful for me to know which types of insurances are mandatory in Germany and whether I have already made all necessary agreements. For example, are there legal regulations for disability insurance or motor vehicle liability insurance?

I thank you in advance for your support and hope that you can help me with my question.

Sincerely,
Lina Kleine

Dear Mrs. Kleine,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the obligation to take out certain insurances in Germany. It is understandable that in your current situation you are concerned whether you have taken out all legally required insurances and whether you are sufficiently protected against potential risks.

In Germany, there are indeed certain insurances that are legally required, while others are optional. The mandatory insurances primarily include health insurance and third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles. Health insurance is a compulsory insurance that ensures that every citizen has access to medical care. On the other hand, third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles is legally required to ensure that damages resulting from an accident are covered.

Additionally, there may be other insurances that could be mandatory in certain cases. For example, disability insurance for self-employed individuals or freelancers may be advisable to provide coverage in case of disability. Also, professional liability insurance may be advisable depending on the field of work.

In your specific case, you have already taken out health insurance through your employer, which is very important. Private third-party liability insurance provides you with additional protection in case of damages. However, it would be advisable to examine your individual situation more closely and consider additional insurances that meet your specific needs.

I recommend seeking comprehensive advice from an insurance specialist or advisor to find suitable insurance solutions together with you. There, you can also discuss your professional situation, financial possibilities, and personal needs to develop tailored insurance concepts.

I hope that I could assist you with this information and remain available for any further questions.
