Ask a lawyer on the topic of Insurance law

Can I use my household insurance while traveling?

Dear Insurance Lawyer,

My name is Anna Mattes and I have a question regarding my household insurance. In my policy, it states that my household belongings are insured in my apartment. Now, I am planning a longer trip and I am wondering if my insurance also covers my personal items while traveling.

I am concerned that my valuables such as laptop, camera, and jewelry are not adequately protected if I take them with me on my travels. I have had some unpleasant experiences with theft in the past and I want to ensure that my property is secure in any situation.

Could you please explain to me if my household insurance also applies to my personal items while traveling? If not, is there a way to expand my insurance coverage or take out an additional insurance to protect my property while on the go?

I thank you in advance for your support and advice on this matter. I look forward to your knowledgeable response.

Sincerely,
Anna Mattes

Dear Mrs. Mattes,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your household insurance and whether your insurance coverage also applies to your personal belongings while traveling. It is understandable that you are concerned about the safety of your valuables such as laptop, camera, and jewelry, especially after experiencing insecure situations with thefts.

Generally, household insurance covers the household contents in your apartment or house. This means that your property is protected against damages from burglary, fire, water damage, storms, and hail. However, it is important to note that insurance coverage usually only applies within the insured living space. This means that your personal belongings are typically not automatically protected while traveling.

If you want to ensure that your property is also secured while on the go, there are various ways to expand your insurance coverage or take out an additional insurance policy. One option is to take out a travel insurance policy, specifically designed to cover personal belongings while traveling. Depending on the provider, this insurance can cover various damages such as theft, loss, or damage to luggage.

However, it is important to carefully review the exact terms and benefits before taking out additional insurance to ensure that your property is adequately protected. I also recommend speaking with your insurance advisor to receive individual advice and find the best solution for your needs.

I hope that this information has been helpful and I am available to answer any further questions you may have.

Best regards,
