Are pain during urination a sign of a sexually transmitted infection?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Alexander Schlosser and I am reaching out to you because I have been experiencing pain when urinating in the last few days. This is causing me great concern, as I am not sure what could be the cause of these symptoms. I do not have any pre-existing conditions in the urology field and have not had any problems in this area before.
The pain when urinating is very uncomfortable and occurs both at the beginning and end of the urine stream. Additionally, I have also been experiencing increased urgency to urinate and the feeling that I need to go to the bathroom more often than usual. There is also a slight burning sensation in the genital area and overall I feel very unwell.
I have researched online and read that pain when urinating could be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection. As I have had multiple partners in the past and have not always practiced safe sex, I am now very worried that I may have such an infection.
My question to you is therefore: Could the symptoms I have described actually indicate a sexually transmitted infection? And if so, what further tests or treatments would you recommend to determine the cause of my symptoms and treat them?
Thank you in advance for your help, and I am available for further information or questions.
Sincerely,
Alexander Schlosser
Dear Mr. Schlosser,
Thank you for your message and your trust in my expertise as a urologist. I am sorry to hear that you have been experiencing pain while urinating and feeling unwell in the past few days. The symptoms you described can indeed be attributed to various causes, including a sexually transmitted infection.
Pain while urinating, increased urge to urinate, burning in the genital area, and the feeling of needing to go to the toilet more frequently are typical signs of an infection in the urogenital area. A sexually transmitted infection such as a urinary tract infection or an infection with Chlamydia or Gonorrhea can cause these symptoms. It is important that you seek medical attention promptly to determine the exact cause of your complaints and receive appropriate treatment.
To clarify the cause of your symptoms, I recommend that you schedule an appointment with a urologist or a specialist in sexually transmitted diseases. A thorough medical history will be taken and a physical examination will be conducted. Additional tests such as a urine analysis, a urine test for infectious agents, a swab from the genital area, or even a blood test may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
Depending on the cause of your complaints, your doctor will then prescribe an appropriate treatment. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for bacterial infections, while other medications or treatment measures may be necessary for viral infections.
It is important that you follow the treatment consistently and also inform your partners about your symptoms so that they can also get tested if necessary. Additionally, it is advisable to practice safer sex in the future to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
I hope this information helps you, and I strongly recommend that you see a doctor promptly to have your complaints evaluated. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Jan Schulz
