How can I alleviate pain after surgery?

Dear doctor, dear team,

My name is Elvira Klein and I had knee surgery two weeks ago. Since then, I have been suffering from severe pain that significantly affects my daily life. I have already been prescribed pain medication, but it doesn't seem to be working effectively. The pain occurs mainly when walking and at rest, and it is becoming unbearable day by day. I am worried that something may not have healed properly or that complications have arisen.

My question to you is how I can effectively alleviate the pain after the surgery. What alternatives are there to the pain medication prescribed so far? Are there any specific exercises or therapies that could help me? Should I see a doctor again to determine the cause of the pain?

I am really desperate and hope for your help to finally be able to live without pain again. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Elvira Klein

Dear Elvira Klein,

I understand your concern and your desire to be pain-free again. It is not uncommon to experience severe pain after knee surgery, but it is important that these pains are controlled and relieved to support your recovery process.

If the pain medication prescribed so far is not effective enough, there are various alternatives that can help you. One option is to combine different pain medications to achieve a stronger effect. Your treating physician can assist you with this and determine the right dosage for you.

In addition, physical therapies such as cold or heat applications, electrotherapy, or acupuncture can also contribute to pain relief. These therapies can improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and support tissue healing. Talk to your treating physician about these options and consider being referred to a physiotherapist if necessary.

Special exercises can also help strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve flexibility. A physiotherapist can help you choose suitable exercises and show you how to perform them correctly.

If your pain continues to be unbearable despite these measures, it is advisable to schedule another doctor's appointment to investigate the cause of the pain. There may be an inflammation or other complication that requires specific treatment measures. Be open and honest with your doctor about your symptoms and concerns so that he can help you as best as possible.

Please do not despair, Elvira. With the right support and treatment, your pain can be relieved, and you will soon be able to live pain-free again. Stay patient and feel free to contact me or your treating medical team with any questions or uncertainties.

I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,
