Is it possible to reverse lip augmentation?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Johann Schaaf and some time ago I had lip augmentation done. Unfortunately, I am not satisfied with the results and now I have concerns about whether it is possible to reverse this enlargement.

The background is that I decided to have my lips injected with hyaluronic acid to make them appear fuller and more voluminous. Unfortunately, the result did not turn out as I had hoped. My lips look unnatural and disproportionately large compared to my face. This is causing me a lot of distress and I feel uncomfortable in my own skin.

My concerns are that reversing the lip augmentation may not be possible or could be associated with risks. I am worried that my lips may look even worse after the reversal, or that scars may remain.

Therefore, my question to you as a specialist in plastic surgery is: Is it even possible to reverse lip augmentation and if so, what methods are used? Are there any risks or complications that I should be aware of? And approximately how long would it take for my lips to return to their natural state?

Thank you in advance for your response and I would greatly appreciate your expert advice.

Sincerely,
Johann Schaaf

Dear Mr. Schaaf,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the possibility of reversing a lip augmentation. I am sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with the results of your lip treatment and are experiencing the consequences. It is understandable that you are considering whether and how a correction is possible.

In general, it is possible to reverse a lip augmentation. In the case of a treatment with hyaluronic acid, as in your case, it is a non-permanent treatment, as hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body over time. This means that the enlargement of your lips will eventually decrease on its own.

However, if you do not want to wait that long or if the result needs to be corrected faster, treatment with an enzyme that dissolves the hyaluronic acid can be considered. This process is called hyaluronidase injection and can help reduce lip volume more quickly.

When it comes to risks and complications of reversing a lip augmentation, it is important that you seek advice from an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon. In rare cases, allergic reactions to hyaluronidase may occur, so it is important to discuss your medical history and potential risks.

Scarring is not usually expected with hyaluronidase treatment as it is a non-invasive method. However, it is important to carefully follow your doctor's post-treatment instructions to prevent potential complications.

The duration until your lips return to their natural state after correction can vary and depends on various factors such as the amount of hyaluronic acid injected and your individual healing ability. However, you can generally expect the volume of your lips to decrease within a few days to weeks.

I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with an experienced plastic surgeon to discuss your situation and receive individualized advice. Your doctor will be able to assess your lips and present you with the best treatment options.

I hope that my response is helpful to you and I am available for any further questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance.

Best regards,
Yvonne Richter
