Ask a doctor on the topic of Pediatrics

My child constantly has problems with his/her ears, what can I do?

Dear team of the online consultation,

My name is Laura Eckstein and I am very worried about my child. My son, Max, is 5 years old and has been having problems with his ears for months. It started some time ago with an ear infection that we had to treat with antibiotics. However, since then it doesn't seem to be getting better. Max often complains of ear pain, has trouble hearing, and also has discharge from his ear.

I am very concerned about his hearing and wonder what could be the cause of these constant problems. I am at a loss as to how I can help my child and wonder if there is anything I can do to alleviate or even prevent the symptoms. I do not want these ear problems to have long-term effects on his hearing.

Could these symptoms be caused by allergies or another underlying condition? Are there specific measures I can take to help Max? Should we see an ear, nose, and throat doctor or is it enough to regularly consult our pediatrician?

I am grateful for any help and advice you can give me to treat and improve my son's ear problems. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Laura Eckstein

Dear Mrs. Eckstein,

I understand your concerns about your child Max and the recurring problems with his ears. It is understandable that you are worried and looking for solutions to help him. Ear problems in children can have various causes and it is important to take them seriously and treat them appropriately.

The fact that Max has been suffering from ear pain, poor hearing, and discharge from the ear for months suggests that the ear infection may not be fully healed or that it is a chronic inflammation. It is important that you talk to your pediatrician about these symptoms and, if necessary, consult an ear, nose, and throat specialist to get an accurate diagnosis and plan the best possible treatment for Max.

It is possible that allergies or other underlying conditions could be the cause of your son's recurring ear problems. Allergies can cause the mucous membranes in the ears to swell and become inflamed, which can in turn lead to infections. Therefore, it may be advisable to also conduct allergy tests to identify possible triggers and take appropriate measures.

To alleviate your child's symptoms and prevent them from worsening, you can take some measures. Keep your son's ears dry, avoid inserting cotton swabs deep into the ear canal, and make sure he does not get exposed to drafts. Furthermore, it is important that Max is regularly examined by the pediatrician to monitor the progress of his ear problems and adjust the treatment if necessary.

I strongly recommend that you discuss Max's symptoms with your pediatrician and, if necessary, obtain a referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Together, you can plan the best treatment for your child and ensure that his ear problems are appropriately and effectively treated.

I hope this information helps you and helps Max find relief from his symptoms soon. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or need additional support.

Sincerely,
Benjamin Meier
