Aneurysm

Hello! Aneurysm was recently diagnosed in my 88-year-old mother's neck. We are planning a 2-hour flight: Is there a risk that the vessel could burst due to the pressure during the flight? Best regards!

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Hello,

The risk of air travel is generally slightly increased, especially due to the blood pressure fluctuations during take-off and landing. However, the crucial question is how large the aneurysm is, that is, how much the carotid artery is dilated. If it is only minimal, I would fly with good blood pressure control. If it is a pronounced aneurysm, or if your mother suffers from severe blood pressure fluctuations, I would advise against flying.

The examining physician can and should be able to tell you more about this.

Best regards, Dr. Höllering
