What consequences can untreated depression have?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Alexander Zornitz and I am reaching out to you because I have been feeling very down and unmotivated lately. I feel like my mood is getting worse and I am unable to enjoy things that used to bring me joy. My sleep is also disturbed and I constantly feel exhausted.

I have heard that these could be signs of depression and I am very worried about the possible consequences if I do not take action. I am afraid that my situation will worsen and I will not be able to cope with my everyday life. My relationships with family and friends are already suffering because of my mood.

Therefore, I am wondering what consequences untreated depression could have. Could it affect my physical health? Or is there a risk that my symptoms will worsen and I may develop suicidal thoughts? Are there any ways that I can try to address my depression on my own before seeking professional help?

I thank you in advance for your time and assistance in answering my questions. It is important for me to understand the consequences of depression and how best to take care of my health.

Sincerely,
Alexander Zornitz

Dear Mr. Zornitz,

I thank you for your trust and openness in sharing your complaints with me. It is important that you take care of your health and seek help if you feel that something is not right. Your symptoms, such as feeling down, lack of motivation, sleep disturbances, and persistent exhaustion, could indeed be signs of depression.

Untreated depression can have significant effects on both your physical and mental health. On a physical level, depression can weaken the immune system, raise blood pressure, increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and lead to sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic pain. Furthermore, untreated depression can increase the risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

Therefore, it is important that you seek professional help to treat your depression. Psychotherapy, medication, and other forms of therapy can help alleviate your symptoms and improve your quality of life. If you wish to take self-help measures, regular physical activity, healthy eating, adequate sleep, stress management techniques, social support, and avoiding alcohol and drugs can help improve your mood.

It is important that you do not feel alone and that you reach out to your family, friends, or professional help if you need support. Even if it is difficult for you to accept help, it is an important step towards your recovery.

I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with a specialist in psychiatry or psychotherapy to have your symptoms evaluated and receive appropriate treatment. Depression is a serious condition that requires professional help, but with the right support, you can overcome your symptoms and return to a fulfilling life.

I wish you all the best on your journey to recovery and am here to help if you have any further questions.

Best regards,
Yvonne König
