Ask a doctor on the topic of General medicine

Which sports are best suited for disease prevention?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Tatiana Bergmann and I am contacting you with a question regarding disease prevention through exercise. I am 35 years old, working full-time, and have noticed lately that I often feel tired and lethargic. Additionally, I have gained some weight in the past few months and overall do not feel as fit as I used to. I am concerned about my health and would like to do something about it.

I have heard that regular physical activity can help prevent diseases and improve overall health. However, I am unsure about which sports are best suited to promote my health. I used to enjoy playing tennis, but unfortunately I currently do not have the time for it. Additionally, I am not very athletic and would like to start with a gentler sport to gradually feel fit again.

Could you please recommend some sports that are particularly well-suited for disease prevention? Which sports are good for beginners and help improve overall fitness? I would appreciate any advice you could give me to help me improve my health in the long term.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Tatiana Bergmann

Dear Tatiana Bergmann,

Thank you for your message and your interest in preventing diseases through sports. It is commendable that you are concerned about your health and actively want to take steps to improve it.

Regular physical activity can indeed make a significant contribution to disease prevention and overall health improvement. I am glad to hear that you are willing to start with a gentle sport to slowly get back in shape. There are a variety of sports that are suitable for beginners to improve fitness and promote health.

One particularly gentle and effective sport for beginners is Nordic Walking, for example. This form of walking with poles is joint-friendly, strengthens muscles, and improves endurance. You can also determine the intensity based on your fitness level, so you can start slowly and gradually increase. Swimming is also a good choice as it engages the entire body, relieves joints, and promotes endurance.

Yoga and Pilates are other sports that are good for beginners. Both combine strength exercises, stretches, and breathing techniques to align body and mind. They improve posture, strengthen muscles, and promote relaxation. They can also be adapted for individuals with health limitations.

Additionally, I recommend incorporating regular walks into your daily routine and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Even small exercise sessions at the office or at home can have a positive impact on your health. It is important to find a sport that you enjoy and can sustain in the long term.

I hope these suggestions help you and motivate you to improve your health through regular physical activity. If you have any further questions or need support, I am here to help.

Best wishes for your sporting activities and your health!

Sincerely,
Laura Lauer
