Which sunscreens are best suited for sensitive skin?

Dear Dermatologist,

I am reaching out to you because I have been experiencing problems with my sensitive skin for some time, especially in relation to sun exposure. During the summer, my skin often reacts very sensitively to sunlight and quickly becomes red and irritated. I have tried various sunscreens, but so far I have not felt that they adequately protect my skin.

I am concerned that my skin may suffer damage and that the risk of skin cancer may increase. Therefore, I would like to know from you which sunscreens are best suited for sensitive skin. Are there specific ingredients I should look out for? What level of sun protection factor would be most suitable to adequately protect my skin?

I am very grateful for your expert opinion and hope that you can give me some recommendations on how to best protect my skin from harmful UV radiation.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Sincerely,
Alexander Strauss

Dear Alexander Strauss,

I am pleased that you have come to me with your skin problems. Sensitive skin that reacts to sunlight is a common issue and it is important to take the right measures to protect your skin from damage.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that sensitive skin is particularly vulnerable to UV radiation. Therefore, effective sun protection is essential. When choosing a sunscreen for sensitive skin, there are some important points to consider. Firstly, you should look for a sunscreen that has been specifically developed for sensitive skin. These products often contain less irritating ingredients and are therefore less likely to cause skin irritation.

An important factor to consider when selecting a sunscreen is the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). For sensitive skin, a higher SPF is usually recommended as these skin types are particularly vulnerable to sun damage. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended, but you can also choose a higher SPF if you want additional protection.

It is also important to pay attention to the ingredients in your sunscreen. Products containing mineral filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often recommended for sensitive skin types. These provide physical protection against UV radiation and are less likely to cause skin irritations.

In addition to using sunscreen, it is also important to take other measures to protect your skin from UV radiation. For example, wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, sunglasses, and a hat to provide additional protection to your skin. Avoid the intense midday sun and seek shade when outdoors.

I hope these recommendations help you better protect your sensitive skin from harmful UV radiation. If you have any further questions or need individual advice, I am happy to assist.

Best regards,
Ludwig Engel
