Can allergies to medications occur during anesthesia?

Dear Doctor,
My name is Erwin Schröder and I have an urgent question regarding anesthesia. In two weeks, I will undergo a surgery in which anesthesia will be administered. In the past, I have experienced allergic reactions to certain medications and now I am concerned whether an allergic reaction could occur during the anesthesia.
My previous allergies mainly involved antibiotics and painkillers. Therefore, I have always been very cautious when prescribed a new medication. I am also afraid that I may not react in time during the surgery if an allergic reaction does occur.
Therefore, I would like to know if it is possible for allergic reactions to medications to occur during anesthesia. Are there any specific precautions that can be taken to prevent such reactions? Should I definitely inform the anesthesiologist about my previous allergies so that they can take them into consideration?
Thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Erwin Schröder
Dear Mr. Schröder,
Thank you for your question regarding anesthesia and allergic reactions. It is understandable that you are concerned, especially due to your previous allergies to antibiotics and painkillers. An operation involving anesthesia is an important and serious matter, and it is crucial that you feel safe and well-informed.
Firstly, I want to assure you that while allergic reactions during anesthesia are rare, they are still possible. Most anesthesia medications are well-tolerated and are usually well-received by most patients. However, it is important that you inform your anesthesiologist of all your previous allergies so that appropriate precautions can be taken.
There are various measures that your anesthesiologist can take to minimize the risk of an allergic reaction during anesthesia. They may use alternative medications that you tolerate well. It is also possible to conduct special allergy tests before the operation to determine if you could be allergic to certain anesthesia medications. Additionally, your anesthesiologist can closely monitor you during the operation to promptly recognize and address any signs of an allergic reaction.
Therefore, it is extremely important that you disclose all your previous allergies to your anesthesiologist before the operation. The more detailed information they have about your medical history, the better they can care for you during anesthesia and respond to any potential allergic reactions.
I hope that this detailed response has been helpful to you. If you have any further questions or need more information, please feel free to reach out. I wish you all the best for your upcoming operation and hope that everything goes smoothly.
Best regards,
Babette Köhler
