Can I as a patient view my medical records?

Dear Medical Law Attorney,
My name is Jenny Sontheimer and I have a question regarding my medical records. I have been under medical treatment for several years and have undergone many different examinations and treatments over time. Now I would like to access my medical records in order to get a better overview of my medical history.
The reason for my interest in my medical records is that I would like to understand what diagnoses have been made, what treatments have been carried out, and if there are any important information that I was not previously aware of. I have been feeling somewhat insecure about my health lately and believe that a closer look at my medical records could help alleviate my concerns.
My question to you is: Is it possible for a patient to access their medical records? If so, how can I best go about this and what steps do I need to take to access my medical records? Are there any legal regulations that govern my rights as a patient in regards to accessing my medical records?
I would be very grateful if you could help me with this question. I look forward to your response and thank you in advance for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Jenny Sontheimer
Dear Mrs. Sontheimer,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding access to your medical records. As a patient, you have the right to access your medical records. This is enshrined in the Patient Rights Act in Germany. According to § 630g BGB, as a patient, you have the right to access your medical records.
To access your medical records, you can contact the treating doctor. You can request access to your records in writing or verbally. Usually, you will be given the opportunity to view your medical records in the presence of the treating doctor or another medical professional. You also have the right to make copies of your medical records.
It is important to note that certain information in your medical records may need to be explained or commented on by a doctor. In such cases, it is advisable to contact the treating doctor to clarify any questions.
It is also important to mention that access to your medical records is legally regulated to ensure your privacy and protect your personal data. This means that certain information in your medical records may be redacted or removed to protect the privacy of other individuals.
In summary, as a patient, you have the right to access your medical records. You can contact the treating doctor directly to access your records. If you have any further questions or need assistance, I am at your disposal.
Best regards,
