Inherit grandchildren

My ex-father-in-law passed away at the end of last year. He had 3 children and my late husband was one of them. When my husband passed away 12 years ago, I renounced the inheritance for myself and my children because of his debts.
Do my children or my grandchildren still have a claim to the compulsory portion of the deceased grandfather's inheritance?

Dear questioner,

The grandchildren are legally entitled to inherit alongside the still living children of the father-in-law, they take the place of the deceased and share the inheritance that would have gone to them. By legal succession, the grandchildren not only have a claim to the compulsory portion but to the entire statutory inheritance that falls to them.

The renunciation only affects the inheritance that could have been passed on by the father or your husband, not the inheritance that falls to the grandchildren from the grandfather.

I hope this has been helpful. If you have any further questions, please ask.

Kind regards,
